What is WordWrite?
WordWrite is a freelance editing service for creative writing.
We focus on short stories and novels, as this is where we have the most experience. That experience spans freelance work, Interactive Publications, Hawkeye Publishing, and editing submissions to our bi-annual magazine. In 2019 we judged the Inklings Short Story Competition and the QUT Literary Salon, and in 2020 judged the Sydney Hammond Memorial Short Story Competition and contributed to the editing of Winning Short Story Competitions by L. E. Daniels and C. Sawyer.
If a particular manuscript is suitable, we are capable of recommending a destination based on our contacts.
Services outlines below
Quick assessment:
Read a few chapters, suss out the synopsis, and provide a quote. This will outline what services the piece requires, and a likely outcome from taking it further, along with some corroborating notes. It could look something like: "Needs a line-edit, but would be vastly improved by first being rewritten based on a structural report. Times and prices for each are included below along with supporting examples."
$50
Structural report:
Read the entire work and assess elements such as pacing and point of view. This is then written up into a report of varying length that speaks to what is and isn't working about a manuscript along with the editor's recommendations for bringing it closer to its greatest potential. This is often what a publisher would provide with the condition that their acceptance is dependent on the recommendations being followed.
$40 per hour
Line editing:
Read the entire work and make trackable changes in Microsoft Word. This addresses elements such as sentence structure and flow, while avoiding substantial additions. Notes may also be added for larger issues that require the author's involvement, such as an entire paragraph that's out of place or a section that needs additional content. This is often what a publisher would provide upon acceptance of a manuscript.
$40 per hour
Proofreading:
Read the entire work and correct mistakes left over from earlier stages of the process. Common examples are words that no longer belong and inconsistent language use (names, punctuation, etc.). This is only worth completing as the final task before publication or submission, as further edits would create a need for further proofreading. This can not be done at the same time as line editing.
